Obituary

William C. Barnes, Jr., age 79, of Ashtabula, Ohio passed away peacefully on April 14, 2020 at the Ashtabula Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Kingsville, Ohio.   He was born June 9, 1940 in Ashtabula, the son of William and Ruth (Hood) Barnes, and was a lifelong resident.

Bill graduated from Edgewood High School in 1958. The day after he graduated he joined the United States Army where he served as an M.P. and was stationed in Germany.  He was so proud to serve his country.

He is survived by his wife, Monica (Crowl) of 14 years; his sisters, Clara Saturday ad Daisy (Richard) Cary; his sons, Cliff and David Barnes; grandson, Jacob Barnes; granddaughters, Brandy (Ken) Blackburn and Alyssa (Curtiss) Hienterliter; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister, Lorretta Verdi.

Bill was a loving father, husband, grandfather, and friend to everyone.  He worked at Rockwell Brake for 20 years before a shoulder injury/joint replacement forced him into disability.  Bill loved sports. He was a long time Cleveland sports fan and spent his summers coaching his son's Little League baseball team, the Yankees.  He spent his free time watching various sports games live and on TV, taking long drives in the country, and having family cookouts.  He loved traveling on AmTrak.  Bill and Monica enjoyed going to the 536 MP's Reunions every year.

He was also a member of the "Statemen Chorus" of The Western Reserve Chapter of the Johnnie Appleseed Barbershop for over 30 years.

Everyone loved his family's recipe for chocolate fudge, which he would make with his sister, Clara, and shared it with everyone for the holidays. He also would take vegetables to the V. A. office in Ashtabula for them to share with others.

His wishes were not to have a funeral service.  He will be privately buried at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Feed Our Vets, 433 Center Street, Ashtabula OH 44004 or The Alzheimer's Association Cleveland Area Chapter, Mentor Office, 8522 East Avenue, Mentor OH 44060.
