Charles "Fred" Fitting

Charles "Fred" Fitting, 80, passed away peacefully on September 21, 2020 at David Simpson Hospice House in Cleveland, Ohio.  Fred was born November 14, 1939 in Ashtabula, Ohio, the son of Floyd B. and Ellen S. (Luoma) Fitting. 

Fred grew up working in the family business, Fittings Trailer Park in Saybrook, Ohio.  He also worked along side his grandparents, who owed and operated Luoma Dairy in Saybrook.  Fred graduated from Harbor High School in 1957 and began working as a stock boy at Saybrook A&P.  After several years, he began working at Moses Super Duper grocery store on State Road in Ashtabula, where he rose to the position of store manager.  In 1975, Fred purchased his own grocery store in Ashtabula, Stop and Shop, which became Fitting's Super Duper.  The grocery business was in his blood and he continued working in it until his retirement.  

Fred was a lifelong member of the Ashtabula Elks #208.  He spent many years on the Elks' golf and bowling leagues, and playing cards with fellow members at the Lake Road lodge. He was also a past member of Messiah Lutheran Church.

He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and many friends during his lifetime.  Fred was extremely proud of his Finnish heritage.  In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening and tending to his tomato plants.  

Fred married Majorie Lou Mild on September 12, 1959.  He is survived by their children,  Kim (Joe) Larko of Ashtabula, Gary (Stephanie) Fitting of Cookville, TN, Karen (David) Detore of Mentor, OH, and Christine (Al) Fitting of Ashtabula; grandchildren, Kristy Larko, Joseph Larko, Bryan (Bonita) Sandella, Amy (Carll) Chiesa, Alexander Seier, Matthew Fitting, Jennifer (Gordon Vanhoy (fiance')) Fitting, and Ashley Fitting; twelve great-grandchildren; sister, Joanne Carpenter; several nieces and nephews; and many friends and colleagues.  

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marjorie Fitting; and granddaughter, Megan Larko. 

Visitation will be 11:00 a.m. until time of service at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at Potti Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1329 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, Ohio 44004.  Rev. Michael Meranda of Messiah Lutheran Church will officiate.  Burial will follow at Edgewood Cemetery.
