Virginia Toivola Obituary

Virginia M (Leonard) Toivola passed away peacefully on July 22, 2018 at Country Club Retirement Campus.  Born July 4, 1930 in Dorset Ohio, she was the daughter of Hershel  and Francis (Murray) Leonard.  Having been born on the 4th of July, she maintained her "firecracker" attitude towards life until the end. She spent her youth living on a farm in Pierpont Ohio, with her siblings.  A graduate of Pierpont High School in 1949, she later went on to graduate from Ashtabula General Hospital School of Practical Nursing. She worked at the hospital until 1959.   On September 5, 1958, she married Wayne Toivola. They were together until his death in 1983.

Virginia worked a variety of jobs over the years but liked being a caregiver the best.  She spent the last 10 years of her working career as an STNA at Country Club Retirement III.
She loved her family and her absence will be greatly missed.

She leaves behind her daughter, Kathy Shepherd; grandchildren, Joshua Todd and Brittany (Ronny Carlisle) Koskinen; great-grandchildren, Blake Todd, Bailee and Hayden Carlisle;  sisters, Patricia (Gaylord) Millard and Sandy Campbell; brother, Harry Lee (Shirley) Anderson; sisters-in-law, Shirley Leonard and Marilyn Toivola; and multiple nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband and parents; step mother, Stella (Senskey) Leonard; brother, Norman Leonard; brothers-in-law, Dick Campbell, Eino and Lauri Toivola, Bob Miller, and Stan Barchok; and sisters-in-law, Helena Uvena, Sylvia Barchok, and Helmi Miller.    She also leaves behind her "puppies," Sassy and Fiji.

There will be a gathering of family and friends on Thursday, July 25th from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at Potti Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1329 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula OH. Virginia was a private person; therefore, interment will be held for the family at a later date.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Country Club Retirement Campus for the care they provided during both her rehab stays and at end of life.
