Violet H. Matteson, 88, of North Kingsville, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 12, 2020, at the Ashtabula County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Violet was born June 9, 1931, in Cleveland, the daughter of Emil and Olga (Kuppe) Gruening.
A 1949 graduate of Andover High School, she met the love of her life, Donald P. Matteson, and they wed on August 3, 1957. They were married for over 45 years before his passing on January 14, 2003. She worked as a bookkeeper at the Star Beacon for over 10 years before the birth of their daughter, Debra Jean Matteson.
Mrs. Matteson was a lifelong member of Conneaut’s First Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed reading, baking, canning, tending to her garden, and especially spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include Vi’s daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Bill Niemi of Jefferson; granddaughter and husband, Cassi (Picard) and Shawn Crumrine of Cleveland; grandson, Andrew Picard (Sydney Baldwin) of Columbus; step granddaughters, Heather (Tommy) Niemi, Brittany (Niemi) and Chris Sliga; step grandson, Jon (Cory) Niemi; great grandson, Oliver Finn Thompson; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Heinz, Albert, and Wilma; and her beloved husband, Donald.
Funeral Service is 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 16th at Potti Lakeside Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1329 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula, Ohio. Rev. Kenneth Roberts will officiate. Burial will follow at North Kingsville’s Eastlake Cemetery.
Calling hours are 4:00-6:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 15th at the funeral home.
