Maureen H. Smith

Maureen H. Smith, 77, of Ashtabula, passed away Friday, June 28, 2019.  She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 15, 1942, the daughter of James and Helen (Conley) Smith.

Maureen graduated from Magnificat High School in 1960 and went on to earn her degree in education from Ursuline College in 1965.  She spent her first five years teaching in Cleveland at St. James Elementary and then went on to a 40-year career at Mother of Sorrows School and Parish as a teacher and Director of Religious Education.  Maureen dedicated her life to the Catholic Church and helping others.  She was a cornerstone of the Good Karma Soup Kitchen and Clothing Bank; she always wanted to lend a hand to those in need of help.

She is survived by her siblings: Brother Charles Smith, CSC, Veronica (Lyle) Pauer, Joseph N. (Phyliss) Smith, and Teresa M. (Brian) Glick; her sisters-in-law, Shirley and Ann; her dear and loving friend, Judith A. Misinec; her adopted family: Christine, Charlene and granddaughter, Chloe, whom she loved as her own; and many nieces, nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, James Kevin Smith and Hugh Dennis Smith.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Peace Parish - Mother of Sorrows Church, 1464 W. 6th St. Ashtabula OH with Rev. Fr. Raymond Thomas celebrating the Mass.  A luncheon to celebrate Maureen's life will follow the Mass at Norman-D Hall (former K of C Hall), 2720 Carpenter Road Ashtabula.  Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, Cleveland.

Calling hours will be held 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Potti Lakeside Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1329 Lake Avenue, Ashtabula.  Memorial contributions may be made in her name to Hospice of the Western Reserve, the Good Karma Soup Kitchen or Neighbor to Neighbor Food Pantry.
