Elmer Backlund

Elmer Backlund, age 90, died Thursday March 14, 2019 at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home in Kingsville. He was born in Esse, Finland on February 9, 1929, the son of Matts and Sofia Bachlund.

Elmer came to America in 1957, married Annabelle (Yeany), and they celebrated over 50 years of marriage. 

He worked at the Union Dock starting in the late 1950’s, moving on to the A & B Dock in Ashtabula Harbor for over 20 years, then retired. He also worked as a security officer and for Dave Marshall. They had many family and friends living in Florence, South Carolina and St. Augustine, Florida. Elmer will be missed by family and friends.

Elmer is survived by his granddaughter, Rhonda (Greg Smith) McCoy of Geneva; grandsons, Randy (Darlene) Crytzer and Larry (Valerie) Mayberry, both of Ashtabula; and many great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

A private family gathering will be held on March 17 in Ashtabula. A Celebration of Life will be held at Greenlawn Memory Gardens in North Kingsville, Ohio at a later date. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Ashtabula County Nursing Home care staff and Hospice of the Western Reserve.
