Mary Ellen Darby-Keene

March 23, 1956 - February 15, 2018

Mary Ellen Darby-Keene, age 61, of Ashtabula, passed away Thursday, February 15, 2018, at home with her family by her side. Mary Ellen was known as Ellen by most people and was born March 23, 1956 in Alexandria, Louisiana, the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth (Eccles) Darby.

Ellen graduated from Pineville High School in Rapides Parish, Louisiana and enlisted in the U.S. Army on January 25, 1977. Ellen graduated with an AAS degree in Nursing from Northwestern State University in December 1993 and completed the Business & Computer Technology course at the Ashtabula County Joint Vocational School on March 1, 2004.

Ellen enjoyed all forms of crafts, reading, and all forms of games which tested her mind but, most of all home improvement projects and gardening. Ellen was an ardent animal lover and volunteered at the ‘Harbor Cat Rescue’ occasionally. Ellen so loved her home state of Louisiana and her LSU Tigers. Ellen became a Cleveland Browns fan though upon meeting her husband in July 1982.

She is preceded in death by her father, Lt.Col. Harry C. Darby and mother, Elizabeth J. Darby.

Ellen is survived by her loving husband, John R. Keene, whom she married January 20, 1986; two sons, Chris Darby of Pineville, LA. and Philip J. Tuminello of Lafayette, LA.; daughter, Mary E. Keene of Bossier City, LA.; granddaughter, Hannah L. Estes of Rockwall, TX; three sisters, Penny (Ken) Foster of Polluck, LA, Susan Darby of Prospect, LA, and Joan (Douglas) Gallant of Pineville, LA; and brother, Danny (Marcia) Darby of Pineville, LA.

A memorial service will be held Monday, February 19, 2018 at 7:00 pm and visitation at 6:00 pm at The Pentecostal Church of God, 2221 Cook Rd., in Ashtabula with Reverend Kenneth Roberts officiating.

We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Varghai, the Cancer Center in Ashtabula, Hillcrest Hospital, and Hospice of the Western Reserve for providing excellent care and loving support. The family requests all memorial contributions be made to a charity of their choice in her name.
